Last Thursday we were able to attend the "fire safety dinner" Tearsa had arranged for the family. Thank you Tearsa for arranging that and congratulations on your burn kit, may you never need to use it. There were some great tips shared, some were new to me and some were just good to be reminded about. Since I know there are some of you who are still working on the last challenge, I will make this next assignment an easy one.
#1-Attending the fire safety dinner (if you weren't there, that's O.K., we will share with you the best parts, which leads to #2)

#3- now that we have been educated, let's put our knowledge into action:
-everyone needs to pull out their fridge and clean behind it(this should be done every 6
months) I figure this is a good time to start doing these "every 6 months" projects
because it is general conference time and it can be a reminder to us, that it is that
time again- you know with the whole being prepared thing.
-replace batteries in smoke detectors (every 6 months)
-place electrical tape over the tops of any 9-volt batteries you have laying around.
This was new info to me, I had no idea these were a cause of fires. The "trained
professional" started a fire just by touching the 9-volt battery end to a piece of steel
wool. Tip: don't store the steel wool in the same drawer as the batteries- EVER.
-have a family home evening on fire safety and practice your fire drill (this too should
be done every 6 months) Teach your kids the saying, "Do not Hide, get outside" (I don't
actually remember the saying, but it was something like that) Apparantly, hiding is
what most kids do because they are scared, and that is the last thing we all want.
I know there were more things but I really don't remember what they were, if any of you that were there remember please post it. This probably seems like a lengthy list, however it's not. It's just my lengthy explanations that make it seem so long. Quick and easy to do, get these done. Love you all.

Thank you Tearsa and Ben for setting up the fire safety dinner! It was good information and got us thinking about what we need to do in our own house. These guys have a good warranty and product, but if you are interested in purchasing fire safety equipment, you may want to do some research first. Kreg did some research and there are other options out there that are less expensive. I guess it depends what you are looking for.
I remembered another thing we are supposed to do every 6 months. We need to clean out our dryer hose. I heard a good way to do this is to stick the hose of a wet/dry vac in the tube, make sure it is hooked on the "blow"ing side of the vacuum and turn it on. This should blow out any lint that is being stored in the hose. I learned that dryer hoses are one of the most common starters of fires at a meeting I went to last year.
Marli you have most of the "things we should do every 6 months" list, but you forgot that we need to make sure there is a 3 ft path around our furnace and check our fire extinguishers every 6 months.
